Emergency 9-1-1
The first implementation of 9-1-1 was in Haleyville, Alabama in January of 1968. Congress declared 9-1-1 should be the National Emergency Number just a few weeks before.
The first call from Haleyville was made by the Alabama Speaker of the House, Rankin Fite on February 6th 1968 to Tom Bevill, a Representative from the U.S. Technology in regards to 9-1-1 service has changed over time, however Haleyville's call proved the concept of 9-1-1 worked.
What is 9-1-1?
9-1-1 is an easy to remember, no-coin method allowing help to be dispatched to a person in need.
When should I dial 9-1-1?
When you feel emergency response is needed.This usually involves threat to life, health, or property.
What should I expect from dialing 9-1-1?
When you dial 9-1-1 in Lorain County, the Dispatcher will answer: "9-1-1 do you need Police, Fire, or Ambulance?"
Stay calm and clear and request the type of service needed...
- Verify your address or provide the location you are calling from.
- Inform the Dispatcher of the location where help is needed.
- Wireless callers should provide their cellular telephone number with the area code as well as mile markers, cross streets, landmarks or other information.
- Remain on the line with the Dispatcher until completion of the call.
- Follow the instructions of the Dispatcher.
- If you dial 9-1-1 in error, DO NOT HANG UP! Stay on the line and inform the Dispatcher you have dialed in error.
